Oh For Crying Out Loud

Woman Aborts Child To Help Save the Planet
Topic: Society and Culture

"Having children is selfish. It's all about maintaining your genetic line at the expense of the planet," says Toni, 35.
"Every person who is born uses more food, more water, more land, more fossil fuels, more trees and produces more rubbish, more pollution, more greenhouse gases, and adds to the problem of over-population."

I pulled the quote from a post by Sallie at Everyday Me. She had additional info, as well as a link to the original article.

I really admire Toni. What a noble thing to do. I wonder if she includes herself in the "every person who is born" category. She does fit the criteria. You know, following her logic, there is one other thing she could do that would be the ultimate act of selflessness, that would take away her carbon footprint completely. Wonder if she ever considered that.
I really can't describe how offended I am by this pseudo-philanthropic mentality. Do we have a whole different camp of pro-choice people now? Cause I'm familiar with the down-and-out, I can't-raise-a-child, people and while I will never agree that abortion is ok in any circumstance, I have always been pretty good about mentally putting myself in other people's shoes, and at least having some compassion, even if I know I would do things differently. And I can do that with the down-and-out girls. To a certain extent.

But this lofty, "abortion as a gift to the planet" spin absolutely makes me want to throw things.

HI Nina!! I've tried loading your other page but I think its the flooble boxes. At least they are the common denominator with all pages that load crazy for me...LOL..

I was so offended by this girls thought processes! I too had the same reaction of she could remove her footprint entirely but I guess that wouldn't be morally correct. How out of touch so many of her thoughts were. Just another Al Gore happy camper!

Thanks for the link!
God bless,
Sallie

P.S. It made my husbands day to get a post from someone else on his chat box :-)

Yup, I totally agree. I thought the exact same thing when I read the first few lines of her post... she should sacrifice herself, not her innocent child, if she's so concerned about overpopulation. Then at least she's made the choice as a selfless act, instead of being innocently murdered. The whole topic of overpopulation gets under my skin. Come live in New England if your city is too crowded. Or in the wilderness of Nebraska. Or northern Canada. There's still plenty of room, people.

Wow, this person is so blind to the truth. I'm with you, Nina, I never agree with abortion. I think this was just her excuse to continue living her extremely selfish life.

Thanks Mom, Keith had told me about her column this morning, but I had already forgotten.
I just read it. For those who haven't, she also makes the case about how ridiculous the idea is, although more eloquently than I ever could, and raises another point.
In her words, "If we're not saving the planet for our kids, for whom are we saving it? After we're all sterilized and aborted, who's going to appreciate the fact that global warming is, by golly, under control?"
